The Lord's Prayer โ The Prayer That Is Enough
For when you have no words of your own, or simply want a moment close to God
When to use it
Any time โ in the morning, in the evening, before sleep, in a waiting room, or in the moment something takes you by surprise. The Lord's Prayer can be said always and anywhere, silently in your mind, even when you are tired and have no words of your own. It is the Christian prayer Jesus taught his disciples, and anyone may pray it.
What you need
Where the candle goes: always in a candlestick or on a fireproof dish โ never directly on the paper, near curtains or anything that can catch. Set it where it cannot be knocked over, and never leave it burning unattended.
How to do it
- 1Set the candle in its candlestick and light it if you have one. If not, simply sit down, close your eyes and rest your hands in your lap.
- 2Breathe slowly for a moment, and picture that you are not alone in this โ that someone is listening with love.
- 3Say the Lord's Prayer slowly, one line at a time. If you stop at a line, let it sound for as long as you need, then continue.
- 4After the final Amen, sit in silence a little longer. The silence after a prayer is part of it โ you do not have to add anything.
- 5You can blow out the candle right after the prayer; if you have no candle, nothing is missing.
The prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
